Childhood is a time of exploration, a time in which the world transforms into something to be discovered. During childhood, a person’s personality normally involves curiosity. As the person gets older, the feeling of curiosity slowly develops into apathy toward new discoveries and experiences. Imagine who we could be if we could get back to that mindset.
Every once in a while, I think about childhood and the events that occurred then because it fascinates me to see the person that I am and my personality was based on those events. An important part of my upbringing was the years I spent living in Florida. Growing up there, I viewed the world as something to explore, almost as a conqueror, with no true concerns about life itself. Seeing things that remind me of those times brings back the confident memories of childhood, which, assuming I am not alone in this thought, we constantly desire to bring back.
No matter how much you want to look toward the future, some events make you remember your past, such as childhood. Surely, reader, you have picked up something with your senses that induces the recollection of the memories in your past, as have I, such as smelling food that you associate with a time or maybe seeing an image that brings back a memory. For instance, while watching some TV, I’ll come across a show that I used to watch and still be able to remember everything about the series and also what I remember doing back when I watched the show. It reveals how our brain works: when we pick up something with our senses, we reveal our past.
As you can tell, I’m very interested in this subject. I do not try to live in the future, but like you I’m sure, I almost fear it. However, no matter how many fond memories I have of my child years, I don’t want to live in the past either. I try to live my life in the present, the convenient space in between the two.
As I gave an example before, certain things will bring back many memories. I saw this recently and remembered many bits and pieces of my childhood years. You might remember a bit while watching this, too, courtesy of Youtube.com.
I really liked the idea of this blog. I have realized that lately, for some reason, I have been thinking more about my past. I think about the different friends I used to have and no longer talk to, activities I used to participate in, and the gradual change my personality has gone through. I love when I see something that reminds me of my childhood. Sometimes I wish I could go back to that moment in time, especially since life seemed so much easier and stress-free back then. However, there are also times that I get reminded of and wish I could forget, so it is occasionally a double-edged sword. Also, I liked the Youtube video at the end because it made me think of my brother: he used to watch the Power Rangers. I don't get to see him very often so I enjoy being reminded about him.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your blog because it was personal. I love to learn more about people and how they think and feel. I also love revisiting my past. I joined Facebook last year and ever since I did, I have had contact with long lost relatives and high school friends. These renewed relationships have caused many memories to resurface. I can't wait to read the next blog!
ReplyDeleteI find that when I see certain images, I also remember things from my childhood. I often yearn for the simplistic lifestyle that comes with childhood as you stated in the post. My most favorite memories are from the TV shows that I used to watch such as Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Power Puff Girls, and Dexter's Lab. Cartoon network had some excellent series in the late 90's and early 2000's; it's a shame that the channel no longer has high quality entertainment. This only makes me wish that I had this aspect of my childhood again, which is exactly the point that you made!
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more that childhood cause me to see the world as a place to be explored. I especailly like your comment on the old TV series, I love when I turn on my TV and Spongebob is on and I can remember Sunday mornings watching it with my siblings and creates that sense of happiness. There are many days that I wish to return to my childhood and be carefree and not stress over homework and working. Most importantly, I feel that it is important to live "future focused" but also to remember that your past has shped you to become what you are today.
ReplyDeleteI greatly enjoy reminiscing, and that's exactly what you're blog helped me do. So in a round about way, I greatly enjoyed your blog. I don't necessarily enjoy reliving my childhood, but that is my own issue! However I did watch my fair share of Power Rangers, and your youtube link definitely made my night!
ReplyDeleteLove this nostalgic post. Took me back to my childhood, of course I was too old for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but the A-Team was my generation. Now that I get thinking, I can recall vividly Fantasy Island and the ultimate, Twilight Zone.
ReplyDeleteJust like history, we study the past to better understand the present.
I enjoyed reading about remembering childhood and how certain television shows take you back. I loved "Different Strokes, Facts of Life and Fantasy Island." Wonder Woman with Linda Carter was also a favorite.
